In order to both unlock, and later upgrade, your Church in Graveyard Keeper, players need to raise the rating of their Graveyard, which is directly adjacent to the Church.
At the start of the game, the Graveyard is in a terrible state of disrepair and most of the gravestones and grave fences in it are damaged. You need to repair these to bring the Graveyard Rating from a negative value to at least a five in order to open the Church.
The wooden gravestones and grave fences can be repaired using Wood Repair Kits that can be crafted at the Workbench, and the stone gravestones and grave fences can be repaired using Stone Repair Kits that can be crafted at the Stone Cutter. It is also at these work stations that you can craft more of these items after burying a new body in the Graveyard.
A bit later, you will need to get your Graveyard Rating to at least a 30 in order to upgrade the Church, and bodies are not delivered to you every single day. One simple trick to adding a +2 to your rating is to craft a Flowerbed at the Blueprint Desk and place it in the Graveyard, but this requires Peat.
Peat is unlocked fairly early in the Farming and Nature tab in the Skill tree, and crafted at the Compost Heap. All you need to do is provide the Compost Heap with Crop Waste, which is a byproduct of farming, and over time it will produce Peat.
You can then craft the Flowerbed with 2 Stone, 2 Red Flowers and 1 Peat. Place it among the graves, and you’re done.
