As I was browsing through the Xbox Game Pass library on my Xbox One last night, I was very pleasantly surprised to see that one of my favorite survival games of all time, The Long Dark, had seemingly quietly joined the already massive line-up of titles on the service.
No official announcement had been made by either Xbox or the developers Hinterland Games that the game would be coming to the service, but here the game was, and so I decided to download it and give it a try.
It seems that The Long Dark had shown up in the Xbox Game Pass library, but I was unable to actually launch the game.
I attempted multiple times, and doing so gave me the error code “0x803f8001”, accompanied by the “Do you own this game or app?” message. You usually get this when you attempt to launch downloaded games available through Game Pass or Xbox Live Gold, after your memberships to those services have run out.
There was a chance that this could have just been a random error for me, but it seems that multiple other users are also experiencing the very same thing.
These three Reddit Threads all talk about The Long Dark showing up for Xbox players through Game Pass, but none of them are actually able to launch it.
Now hopefully this is a situation where the game is actually coming to the Game Pass service and this is just a genuine error that made the game appear early in the library before an official announcement had been made.
We’ve heard nothing so far though, but we’ll update the article when we get an official response to this from either Xbox or Hinterland Games.
