Derek Yu, the creator of the indie hit Spelunky, has just announced that the highly anticipated sequel to his beloved roguelike title, Spelunky 2, has just been delayed to after 2019.
The announcement was made on Derek Yu’s official Twitter page, where the developer explained that they needed more time to finish the game.
Hey, Spelunky fans! Unfortunately, I don't think we're going to get to release Spelunky 2 this year. Development is still going well and we're not far off target, but the density and detail of the game is demanding more time.— Derek Yu (@mossmouth) August 14, 2019

They’ve listened to the feedback they’ve received from the community, and they’re working on improving the visuals of the game.
A 2020 release date was not confirmed however, even if it is really likely, and Derek Yu had this to say specifically:
“As soon as we have a release date for Spelunky2, we’ll make sure everyone knows! We can’t wait to show you more, although of course the best way is for you to experience it for yourself at launch. All the crazy stuff we’re adding makes me buzz with excitement.”
So while no release date has been confirmed as of now, we expect to hear more in the coming months.
