The official gameplay trailer for Red Dead Redemption 2 is out now, and it’s everything fans have been hoping for. Scratch that actually, it’s much more than what we’ve been hoping for because the game look phenomenal.
But one thing I’ve noticed in the trailer, which was actually touched upon a few months ago, is that the number of weapons players can carry on their person seems to be fairly limited in the game. Unlike the prequel, which allowed you to carry all of the different types of weapons at once including multiple rifles, it seems you can only carry one or two weapons at any one time.
One particular shot from the trailer, seen below, shows protagonist Arthur Morgan carrying two rifles. And while one rifle is slung across his back, the other he is carrying in his hand, giving us the impression that the one he’s carrying in his hand is temporary, while the one on his back is the one he actually has equipped.
The voiceover in the trailer says that you can use the saddle bags on your horse to carry more weapons, and we can even see shots where Arthur takes out weapons from them. In the image to the left you can see Arthur pulling out a rifle, and on the right you can see him pull out a revolver.
Nothing has been confirmed as of yet, but my take on this is that players can only carry 2 revolvers and a single rifle at any one time, a system very similar to what we saw in Max Payne 3. Everything else, including bows and spare guns, are stored in your saddle bags.
Another source that seems to back up this speculation is a first impressions video by IGN that was posted back in May. In it, the journalists mention how the horse is used to store most of your best gear, including the big rifles. So in theory, if the horse runs away from you because of a wild animal or a gunfight, you lose access to the greater part of your arsenal.
Now of course none of this has actually been confirmed, and I’m only speculating on what I’ve heard about the game so far and what little the new gameplay trailer has confirmed. But from what I can tell, there’s a pretty good chance that this is actually the case, and I would actually prefer it that way.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is set for release on the 26th of October, 2018 for the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4. No release for the PC has been announced as of yet.
